We were delighted to once again welcome Eleanor Riley to the Art Department to talk about Tanzanian arts, crafts and cultures.  Former student Eleanor founded the charity Made With Hope in order to empower children, especially girls, in rural Tanzania to access quality education to break the cycle of poverty.  Eleanor spoke to Year 8 students about the differences between educational opportunity in Tanzania and the UK, and shared her own journey from a student at Sale Grammar School, through university, to creating and developing a successful charity.  Students were able to investigate examples of Tanzanian crafts, such as batik, paper beads, and traditional Masai beaded jewellery.  Of most interest were the samples of traditional clothing.  Students across Year 8 will explore Tanzanian traditional arts and crafts such as repeated fabric pattern, TingaTinga painting, and wax resist pattern work.  As part of our growing collaborative project, copies of student’s art created last year were shared with students in Tanzania.  We look forward to sharing our learning and supporting the ever growing schools in Tanzania with beautiful cultural art work that we make this year.  If you are interested in finding out more about Eleanor’s charity further information can be found on www.madewithhope.org
