The Great Sale Grammar Bake-off (And not a soggy bottom in sight)

Posted on: October 9th 2015

Mrs Branch (a young but just as glamorous Mary Berry) and Mrs Booth (a supportive but just as funny Sue Perkins) set the standards high with their bake-off expectations.  The technical bake: a Christmas Tea Ring.  Would this challenge prove a tricky one and separate the wheat from the chaff?
The bakers came from all corners of the school to participate in the ultimate battling bake off.  Aprons were on and gloves off as the bakers watched Mrs Branch's demonstration with eagle-eyes and sinking hearts.  Desperate to prove their baking prowess, they savoured her every word.
What could go wrong?  We all had the same ingredients and the same instructions.
The demonstration over, we were out of the kitchen stalls, and the race for yeasty perfection was on.  Some people had moisture issues and flour surplus problems.  Some of us overstuffed our dough and some of us managed to wear more of the flour than bake with it. Some of us had problems with proving and struggled with our rise.  However, all of us produced a tea ring by the end of the session.
Although Dr McNamara kept wandering through and eyeing the baked goodies, it was Miss Hall who came and passed a much kinder judgement than could be expected from Paul Hollywood.  No real judgements were made, but if they had been, Star Baker would have been Mrs Branch whose Christmas Tea Ring was sheer perfection.
Our smiles were as warm as our baked creations.  What a lovely way to end a busy day.  Thank you!
