MFL Spelling Bee competion

Posted on: July 16th 2015

It has been another successful year for the MFL Faculty at this year’s Routes into Languages Spelling Bee.  Twelve pupils from Year 7 progressed to the School final, where the four places in the Northwest final were hotly contested. It was a very close competition with all participants performing exceptionally well. Molly Kane (7E), Bogdana Kolodiy (7G), Smrutee Kandale (7L) and Beth Robinson (7A) all secured a place in the next stage at Manchester Metropolitan University.

They represented themselves and the school magnificently, competing against some of the Northwest’s finest spellers from 93 different schools.  We are very proud to announce that Smrutee Kandale was crowned North West Champion after spelling an impressive 20 words in one minute using the Spanish alphabet.

Following on from this success, Smrutee went on to represent both Sale Grammar School and the North West region at the national finals held at Cambridge University on Friday 3 July 2015.  Of the 22,000 students who entered the competition in the Spanish strand alone, Smrutee faced tough competition from 35 of the country’s finest young linguists.  During the finals, Smrutee reproduced her efforts from the regional final and correctly translated and spelled out an impressive 20 words in one minute using the Spanish alphabet. Although the competition was close, nobody could surpass her and she was therefore declared MFL Spelling Bee National Champion 2015.

We are all extremely proud of Smrutee’s hard work and of her achievements!
