Mastering new skills

Adult and Family Learning

Adult and family learning is an important part of the SGS community engagement initiative. We provide an extensive primary INSET programme through which primary school teachers have access to courses in Art and Design, Design and Technology, Science and Maths and MFL.

We also provide art and craft training opportunities for pre-school providers in addition to family learning experiences in art and design and adult learning opportunities though our ‘Be Inspired' evenings.

Adult Learning Week

Three evenings in June saw a distinctly different type of student at Sale Grammar School. Pens and notepads in hand, a large group of adults entered the school to participate in some extra-curricular activities. As part of the national Adult Learning Week initiative, staff at the school had volunteered their time to arrange very successful ‘Be Inspired' learning evenings.

The event was designed to offer opportunities for parents and friends of Sale Grammar, and members of the local community, to learn a new skill and be creative in one of the many short courses on offer.
Adult students were tempted by a variety of taster sessions on offer, from creative canvases, sculptural ceramics through to photographic manipulation.

Event co-ordinator, Mrs. Bedford, said "Tonight has been about opening our doors even wider to local people. It has been a fantastic success, thoroughly enjoyed by those who attended and the staff responsible for delivering the courses."

Family Learning

Our Family Learning Initiative extends Sale Grammar's current community programme and develops our links with local primary schools. The aim of the programme is to offer families the opportunity to engage with their children's education and to promote intergenerational learning. Family members could be parents, carers, siblings or grandparents.

Year 3 students from Broadheath primary school have also benefitted from a workshop with parents and students making beautiful clay cakes. Community coordinator Mrs. Bedford said "Seeing students working together with a family member is of great importance and reflects the ethos of our community links."
