Arts Community Projects

Sale Grammar School is committed to life-long learning through the arts.

Through active involvement in community based initiatives we aim to raise students' awareness of social and cultural diversity and encourage them to become more thoughtful and responsible citizens.

During the school year, numerous community projects are undertaken in conjunction with the school's Art Department.

We invite you to read through a selection of these projects below.

Recent Arts Community Projects Initiatives

Manchester Day Parade

This year saw Gifted and Talented Key Stage 4 pupils take part in a momentous occasion
for Manchester, in a celebration of the city's great success. Not only was this the first Manchester Day
in history, but the first ever day held to specifically celebrate one city in the whole of the country! It was,
therefore, a true honour for our own students to be part of. They became part of Ms Peacock's flowery garden in the Pride of Manchester ensemble, led by the Indian Society. Each flower in the collection represented separate cultures within Manchester's diversity, one of which was the lotus flower to symbolise Hinduism.

Preparing the costumes

To prepare for the day, students from Years 7, 8 and 9 took part in one of the WOW workshops organised especially for the event. Our students were tasked with creating hats as part of their floral costumes using the special material ‘funky foam'. During the procession they became a garden of movement as they energetically danced in a Bollywood style complementing the Indian theme.

Student and dancer Helena Edwards described the day as "a thoroughly enjoyable experience, which I would love to have the opportunity to take part in again." Councillor Pat Karney, Manchester Day chair, was quoted as saying "This was the best parade Manchester has ever seen - a world-beater up there with New York, Sydney and Rio"

Lymm Festival

Our Year 8 students grouped together recentlyto create large scale colourful decorative screensbased on the work of Michael Craig-Martin for the Lymm Festival. This was a fantastic opportunity for the students to work in groups and to display their work in an outside exhibition.

Designing the artwork

Our students'work was displayed in a garden, alongside artwork from other schools in the area. Art teacher and community link Mrs. Howarth said, "The screens were wonderful and innovative and the students learned the important skills of working in a team".

It is an annual event, which takes place every summer term. Six of their Key Stage 3 Students and six of 7G teamed up together to make large, colourful cakes. It was a collaborative scheme and the final product was excellent, showing teamwork and their artistic skills. Art teacher Mrs. Bedford commented "This is an event that I always look forward to. It never ceases to amaze me how patient and caring our students are".
