Science Community Projects

As a specialist science school, Sale Grammar School strives to create a visible scientific ethos that is understood clearly by pupils, parents and the community, and which inspires and motivates.

We offer a variety of extra curricular activities in order to share resources and disseminate good practice with our partner schools and local businesses. A great deal has been achieved in the first year of science as a second specialism and we are excited about all of our future projects.

On this page you can browse through both upcoming and recent partner schools community events. We obviously can't show everything on one page, so please also take a look at our archived events - click here.

Recent Community Initiatives

Continuing Professional Development

This community event was held on July 13th 2009. Sale Grammar School has recently purchased 15 Digiblue stop-frame animation cameras, which are available for our partner primary schools to borrow at no cost for 2 weeks at a time. This session involved using these cameras to familiarise staff with the cameras and the software that accompanies them in order to develop ways they could be used in the classroom.

Weekend Workshops

Year 5 pupils from Sale Grammar feeder primaries attended a series of workshops at the Museum of Science and Industry and at school. The theme of the event was "Our place in the universe and how life is sustained on Earth". The first session was carried out at the museum, where pupils attended the planetarium and gathered information for the following week's activities.

Working in the SGS labs

At Sale Grammar School the pupils then carried out a practical investigation to see the effects of human activity on the atmosphere and then built models of imaginary planets to show what lifeforms would be found there and how they would survive. Feedback from the event was very positive and this is hopefully the first of many such events.

Year 5 Practical Work

Year 5 and 6 pupils from Forest Park came into SGS to carry out practical work as part of the school's community commitment to local feeder primary schools.

The pupils learned new practical skills, including the use of Bunsen burners, in a real laboratory setting. They were assisted by eager Year 12 students, Lizzy Philipson, Daniel Darbyshire, Tom Powell, Gurdeep Farar and Charlotte Horrocks.

Continuing Professional Development - Developing Investigative Skills in Science

This session took place at Sale Grammar School and involved carrying out a practical investigation in order to determine how best to deliver this aspect of the curriculum. Resources were provided on the day, with electronic versions to take away and use in the teachers own schools.
