Science Specialism Extra Curricular
GO4SET
A group of Year 8 Students from Sale Grammar School have worked on a project to investigate the use of energy in their school. Chris Owen, a Fuel Route Engineer from the Reactor Services business, has acted as their company mentor. This involved weekly visits to the school to help the students run their project and prepare for the assessment day. Click here to read the full article that appeared in the magazine 'Nucleus'.
After School Science and Engineering Club - for Year 8 students
This is a club for gifted and talented science students - the selected students are invited to attend towards the end of Year 7 and are able to attend every Tuesday evening throughout Year 8. During their time in the club the students undertake a wide range of activities, some being cross-curricular ones, they are able to go on several trips and have the opportunity to earn the BA Bronze Crest Award.
GCSE Astronomy - for students in Year 9 and Year 10
This course begins just before the summer to allow students to begin their coursework over the summer holiday. The students then do two hours per week after school on a Wednesday evening and take the GCSE exam the following May.

Young Astronomers
There are also additional sessions when there are opportunities for observations of the night sky and trips out. It requires a considerable commitment to take an additional GCSE exam one or two years early and in less than one year!
Technology Challenge 2009 - for Year 12 students
Sale Grammar School has two teams of four students entered for this Challenge which is held at the University of Manchester from 6th - 10th July. The students work with a mentor from industry or academia to solve a real life problem using their Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) skills. It gives them experience of working in a team to do what real engineers do and they earn the BA Silver Crest Award for this.
BOC Chemical Engineering Competition 2009 - for Year 10 students
Sale Grammar School has a team of seven students entered for this competition in July.
Nuffield Bursary Placements - for Year 12 students
This year Sale Grammar School has three students who have found placements and been awarded Nuffield Bursaries which will allow them to carry out research projects alongside University Departments for a block of 4-5 weeks during their summer holiday. Once the project is completed, they then produce a report and display on which they will be questioned and if they pass that, they also will earn the BA Gold Crest Award (as well as having had a valuable experience and lots to write on their UCAS application).
