£10 Initiative
After the success of the student driven "Go Green" campaign of last year, which raised awareness of the need to conserve energy, gifted and talented students at SGS are participating in a new recycling initiative. Teams will be competing against each other to try and turn £10 into as much profit as possible. Using their original funds they must use the money in a way that makes as much money out of recycling as possible. During the campaign they will also be producing a presentation on food waste which will be posted live on the intranet after Easter for the student community to vote on which presentation they feel has the most impact. We really hope this campaign is as successful as last year's eco project and that it encourages recycling at both the school and at home.
Recent Projects
Recycling Project
After the success of our drive to reduce our energy use, the next campaign planned for the September 2009 term is going to focus on recycling within our school and what we can do to encourage and promote this within our community. We hope to work with local schools to make this a fantastic community project and we also plan to add an international element by involving our partner schools in Cape Town.
Go Green Week
Sale Grammar Schools drive towards sustainability took another major step forward this year with the SGS Go Green Week, an initiative designed and driven by the pupils. Eco reps from all form classes enjoyed handing out warning calling cards to teachers who had left energy wasting electrical items on unnecessarily.

Students and teachers alike were also rewarded by pupils handing out stickers for good environmental practice. Other activities included an environmental poetry competition and an eco quiz during form time with prizes provided by Trafford for the winners. The unique event was covered by journalists from the Sale and Altrincham Messenger and Trafford Metro who were impressed by the initiative shown by students during this campaign.

Woodheys Primary School, a leader in environmental sustainability, invited the SGS Go Green team to deliver an assembly about the campaign to the whole school and the eco teams also met to share good practice and gain ideas for future projects.
The energy meters, monitored by students throughout the week, showed a significant reduction in our energy usage both during and after the week and we hope that this fantastic success will continue in the future.
Fair Trade Week
This year students at Sale Grammar School have enjoyed participating in the national fair-trade fortnight. During this campaign Sale Grammar sixth formers sold fair trade products to fellow students whist all pupils also competed for the chance to win fair trade prizes provided by the local co-op by completing a fair-trade themed quiz during form time. Finally Key Stage 3 geographers enjoyed taking part in a fair trade banana activity which aimed to highlight the problems faced by producers in less developed countries. We plan to hold this fair trade fortnight next year in order to raise awareness and promote fair trade.

The "Big Tidy Up"
Guidance classes from Years 7, 8 and 9 took part in the Encams national event "The Big Tidy Up". Students took responsibility for cleaning up our local community using litter picking equipment provided by Trafford. The day was a fantastic success with students really appreciating fist hand the impact of littering on our local environment. Overall 16 full "Big Tidy Up" sacks were collected meaning that the pupils involved had a significant impact in reducing the problem of litter in the areas that they covered. Geography classes in Year 9 have also enjoyed playing their role by conducting a litter survey around the school grounds to analyse patterns and come up with solutions to the problem of littering around school. We hope that some of these solutions can be eventually implemented to improve our school environment.
