Whole School Initiatives

Welcome to our whole school community page. Here you will find recent whole school community initiatives that Sale Grammar School has been involved in and also upcoming whole school community events that may interest you.

During the school summer holidays, we run community summer schools targeted at students from Key Stage 2 and Key Stage 3. This summer, 2009, we held a 'Music Summer School - In the Jungle', a 'Visual Arts Extravaganza', a 'Summer Sports Camp', a 'Gifted & Talented Ceramics Workshop' and a 'Science Summer School Experience'.

Recent Whole School Community Initiatives

Athletics Festival

Our year 10 GCSE P.E. students kicked off 2009 with contributions to the community by demonstrating their organisation and leadership skills at an ‘Athletics Festival' held at Sale leisure centre during January. The primary schools involved included Saint Mary's, Brooklands and Tyntesfield. Amongst our students taking part in the event were Abi Hopcroft, Josh Woods and Amin Choudhary, all of whom expressed what a great experience they'd had and how much everyone who took part had learnt about leadership skills.

"We helped some of the more nervous youngsters gain confidence about their running and jumping" said Abi. Group leader and P.E. Community Co-ordinator Mr Churchill added that all students who participated in the festival were a credit to the school and showed a great deal of enthusiasm. After all events were completed, the eventual winners were Tyntesfield - congratulations to them!

Brentwood 'Sunflower Project'

Sixth form students from Sale Grammar School and pupils from Brentwood School have enjoyed working together recently on a collaborative gardening project. As part of Sale Grammar School's Science Specialism, the group of 18 students has been involved in the exciting task of rejuvenating the Key Stage 3 quad, planting sunflower and nasturtium seeds to brighten up the school's surroundings.

Following a preliminary visit to Sale Grammar during which students worked together on an Art project, making sunflowers out of paper plates, plastic cups and crepe paper, the Brentwood students returned last week to prepare the ground and plant the flowers. "The scheme has been a tremendous success so far," said link coordinator Miss Brown. "The students have really bonded as a team and some very good friendships have been forged already. Inclusion is a very important aspect of learning at Sale Grammar and I am very proud of the fact that our pupils have been so keen to get involved in this community project."

Sports Leadership Challenge

PE teacher, Mr. Churchill, along with GCSE PE students, took a trip recently to the sports leadership academy in Davyhulme. The academy consists of various students from different schools across Trafford including Sale Grammar sixth form students Chris Lunt, Natalie Graham and Andrew Wilson and GSCE students Abby Hart, James Asher and Annabel Parker.

A large team of over 30 students led the session supporting younger students and teaching them training drills for sports such as rugby and cricket. The Year 10 students that attended the event with Mr. Churchill also began to learn skills along the way to become a sports coach and possibly continue on to one day teaching younger students in the future.

Year 1 Multi Skills Sport Festival

Sports leaders from Years 9 and 10 recently took part in a Key Stage 1 multi skills sports festival, hosted by Brooklands Primary School. Sale Grammar School's skilled athletes led Year 1 students in a variety of sporting skills helping the youngsters to gain more confidence in themselves when competing.

Students from Springfield, St Joseph's, St Mary's and Tyntesfield primary schools thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon as did the leaders. A proud Mr. Churchill congratulated our students on the professionalism and enthusiasm they had showed during the festival. He commented "I was particularly impressed by the standard of commitment shown by the Year 9 students involved in the festival. This was their first leadership challenge and they performed very impressively."
