Year 7 Active Learning Week 2010

As part of our specialist status in the Visual Arts, the school's Year 7 students recently participated in a four-day International Arts Festival. During the four days students had the opportunity to take part in a wide range of musical, dance, drama and art based activities.

Activities during the week focussed on providing an insight into the diversity of European culture alongside the development of a wide range of personal skills. Joining them were community artists, who inputted a variety of unique techniques and ideas into the week's work.

A wide range of artistic techniques were incorporated into the week's programme, such as using recycled materials to create sculptures of Galapagos turtles which are now proudly displayed in the Key Stage 4 quad.

They painted pictures in the style of Van Hassan using stencils to create portraits of buildings. Students also demonstrated their talents by creating a unicorn sculpture out of wire and tissue flowers which looked very impressive indeed. Flags were created out of fabric with each one representing an aspect of a different culture.

Away from the art activities, students got to try their hand at cooking having the option of making tasty authentic pizza and sampling homemade tapas. An element of competition was brought to the week through the ‘It's a Knockout' activity, a series of mini sporting competitions ranging from shooting hoops, table tennis and ultimate frisbee which were enjoyed by all the groups.

This fun filled week was rounded off with a highly anticipated trip to either Alton Towers or a cycling workshop at Sale Water Park. With fantastic weather all of the day on Friday both groups had a brilliant time in the sunshine.
