Make it and Bake it 2015

Posted on: November 3rd 2015

During the Autumn half term holiday, a number of our KS3 students decided to join Miss Walsh and Mrs Booth for another successful 'Make it and Bake it' workshop. This is the third time the Design and Technology faculty have offered this new style holiday course; where students have the opportunity to work with a variety of materials and processes in order to produce a range of high quality goods to take home.

"I've had lots of fun over the last couple of days. I enjoyed making the cityscape tea lights as everyone's was different and it was interesting to use Adobe Illustrator for the first time."

The students started the activities by designing and making a laser cut cityscape, developing their Adobe Illustrator skills and 3D understanding as the 2D design was transformed into a tea light holder.

Next, the students started to work with felt construction creating the base and lid for their pumpkin.

After lunch on day 1 Miss Walsh demonstrated the making of an apple pastry flower. This was a challenging and fiddly make, but the results were very impressive.

" I have really enjoyed my time here at the SGS workshop. I have never had a moment to be bored. I enjoyed cooking, using felt and making delicate designs on the computer. My favourite was making the pumpkin as your hands got messy and I had lots of fun sewing. Robert and Emilie helped me a lot on Illustrator as I had never used it before. Overall I have had a really fun time here and thank you to the teachers that put on this holiday club."

Day 2 started with the tray bake, and whilst this was cooling the students extended and developed their skills by doing the washing up! After break they had the opportunity to create an acrylic laser cut keyring and embroidered the face onto their pumpkin.

Once their cake had cooled the clever and effective feather icing was added before the cake was placed into the display cases.

After lunch the finishing touches were added to all of their products and then another 'Make it and Bake it' came to a productive end.

Miss Walsh, Mrs Booth and the students would also like to thank Emilie Chandler and Robert Moran-Birch, two Year 13 Product Design A Level students, who gave up their free time to support the running of the course.Group

"I found it fun, and got CAKE!!, customised keyrings and two nice tea lights. I am definitely coming at Easter."
