Flava Visit

Posted on: February 7th 2019

Thursday 7th February saw a small group of lucky Year 10 and 11 GCSE Food Preparation and Nutrition students attend a visit to Flava, a food manufacturers in Sharston.  It was Sales first visit as a school and we were excited to know what the day involved.

From the moment of our arrival we were not disappointed as we received a warm and enthusiastic welcome. The staff at Flava couldn’t wait to start their well-planned out programme of activities. The activities were designed to show our students the workings of a food manufacturers; developing, branding and manufacturing the product from start to finish all on one site in the hope of inspiring students to consider a career in the different areas of the business.

Some of the highlights of the day included the tasting laboratory where students could develop their own dried spice rub to marinade food and a tour around the quality control laboratory with scientific demonstrations of how food products are checked for their suitability to be sold to customers. The students and staff enjoyed wearing the overalls and high visibility jackets to walk around the factory too with a few giggles along the way. The grand finale was the tasting of foods that had been cooked using the manufacturers own food products by the in-house executive chef. This was just delicious and this was the only time the students were silent!

The staff and students were delighted with the visit to Flava. Mrs Kettle was extremely pleased with how the students networked with numerous members of staff from Flava at the end of the session. Here they got to meet staff from all areas of the business and discuss their roles and what it involves. When the staff and students returned to school they were all on high, telling other students what an amazing trip it was. Overall it was a huge success and one that we shall endeavour to arrange again.
