PTA

WHO ARE WE, AND WHAT IS OUR ROLE?

SGS PTA is a registered charity whose primary role is to raise money to help provide materials, resources and facilities to enhance the education of SGS students and benefit everyone who uses the School. Thanks to our fundraising efforts and the support of parents, we have been able to donate between £7,000 and £8,000 pa to the School in recent years.

We are fortunate at SGS to have a PTA that is an integral part of the School community, and in addition to fundraising, we provide opportunities for parents to meet and socialise with each other - either through participation in the various events we organise, or through attendance at meetings and active involvement in the planning and running of our fundraising activities. We also support the School by serving refreshments at School productions, concerts and open evenings and we put on annual discos for KS3 students to socialise with their whole year group.

HOW IS THE MONEY WE RAISE SPENT?

Over the years the PTA has helped to fund a number of projects and purchases to enhance the School's facilities. We have contributed to the refurbishment of the KS3 and KS4 quads as well as the purchase of a climbing wall and the creation of the new Student Services Area; we have bought new curtains and stage lighting for the hall, provided uniforms and music stands for the School's bands and funded a permanent balcony in the main hall to house equipment for use in the School's music productions. In the past we have purchased outdoor table tennis tables and a range of sports equipment for use on the new Astroturf pitch, whilst most recently we have provided a camera for the Art department, a sound desk for the Music department and 20 new microscopes for the Science department. The PTA also funds the School's online subscription to the New Scientist and Wide World magazine.

WHAT IS OUR GOAL FOR THIS ACADEMIC YEAR?

This year we are raising money to pay for new pianos for the Music department and gym mats for the PE department. We are also looking forward to contributing to the enhancement of the new 6th Form extension.

HOW DO WE ACHIEVE THIS?

The PTA is made up of a committee of people - parents and teachers - who meet regularly to plan events and activities, and is supported by a team of parent-volunteers who give their time to help out at these events. Each year we welcome new parents to come and join us and bring fresh ideas and energy.

Activities can vary from year to year, but our efforts are generally focused on the following:

Car Boot and Table-top Sales (indoor and outdoor)

These ever-popular and successful sales are held three times a year in the School car parks and halls, and raise over £1,000 every time. Keep your eyes open for details of the next sale, and come along to support your School. Or why not take a pitch yourself and sell on all your unwanted goods?

SGS 1200 Club

The PTA runs its own lottery - the SGS 1200 Club - which raises around £2,000 every year ... but if every family in the School bought just one ticket a year, we could raise ten times this amount! Please help make this the best year ever.

Year 7 Disco

The Year 7 Disco is held annually and now takes place in the summer term.
