A Level Art Liverpool Galleries Trip

Posted on: December 2nd 2019

A Level Art students visited Liverpool Art Galleries in November to explore the collections of the Liverpool Tate Gallery and The Walker Art Gallery.  The Walker Art Gallery houses a collection of Pre-Raphaelite paintings to complement those that Year 12 and 13 can see locally at Manchester Art Gallery.  Of particular interest were the large contemporary paintings in the John Moores Painting Prize, especially Peter Doig's 'Blotter', and the mediaeval arts and crafts.

The afternoon was spent at the Tate Gallery.  Tate Visitor Assistant Jason provided a lively and interesting insight into his favourite images within the collection,  explaining to students how his training and career in design and advertising had led to him working with some of the most exciting artists of our time, and amongst some of the most important collected art works.

Students spent time drawing from and analysing the art on display in both locations and finished the day drawing from the Three Graces as they sought to understand the maritime history of the Liverpool Docks.
