Steve Oliver Alumni Visit

Posted on: February 17th 2020

The Art Department were delighted to welcome alumni Steve Oliver to the department to share his journey from GCSE Art through studying for his MA in Fine Art at MMU.  Steve now teaches in the School of Arts and Media at the University of Salford and works from his studio at Rogue Artist Studios CIC.  https://rastudios.co.uk/

Steve talked with students about the challenges of working in an art studio, and he shared his enthusiasm for exploring ideas in collaboration with others.  €‹Steve's work investigates the structures that make photography and video ‘work’. It is made exclusively in-computer (no cameras), with material sourced from Internet searches.  He shared his understanding of how the traditional practical art skills he had learnt in school supported him when he was able to investigate contemporary art practice at art school.

Students were able to handle and investigate prep sheets and studies in order to understand the processes Steve uses to create his large scale digital collages, and were encouraged to think beyond art as being a technical skill that hangs on a wall, but as a means of investigation and expression.

Steve’s work can currently be seen in Home’s Manchester’s Open Exhibition 2020 which runs until Sunday 29th March 2020.  Further information about Steve Oliver’s art work can be found at https://www.steveoliver.co.uk/
